A GST inspector was recently defrauded of Rs 8 lakh by a woman who promised to secure the admission of her daughter into a medical college. Mr. Shivaji Patil (55) registered a complaint at Wanawadi police station. Patil, who resides in Malabar Hills, alleged in his complaint that Mughda alias Mitali Kulkarni (28) promised him to secure her daughter's admission to DY Patil college, claiming that she had good relations with state home minister Sataj Patil.

After passing class XII in 2017, Patil's daughter was unable to get admission into a medical college. She then enrolled in a BBA course, but dropped out and began preparing for medical entrance exams again.

Patil met Kulkarni during a program, where she introduced herself as a lawyer. During the conversation, Patil informed the woman that his daughter wants to pursue MBBS but had not been able to secure a seat in a medical college. The accused told that she was acquainted with the state home minister and promised him to get her daughter admitted to the MBBS program at DY Patil College, Nerul. She further said that the college has only one reserved seat and he needed to pay a donation to secure a seat. Therefore, Patil transferred Rs 6 lakh to her bank account and Rs 2 lakh in cash.

Later, Patil realized he had been cheated. Patil demanded the money back, but she refused to do so. Finally, he approached the Wanawadi police and filed a complaint.

A case under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been filed against the accused.
