Whoever, in order to commit extortion, puts any person in fear of injury to his person or property, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.

IPC Section 385: Explained in Simple Terms

The legal provision talks about extortion. It states that if any person who forces another person, and makes any demand in return by threatening to harm them or their property, is said to commit “Extortion”. Such an act is punishable with up to 7 years in prison, and the person could also be fined. In simple terms, if someone scares you into giving them something they want by threatening to hurt you or mess with your stuff, they could go to jail and have to pay a fine.
