A woman kidnapped a three-year-old girl from Dhole Patil road in the city a week ago. The child's mother, who sells balloons on the streets in the area, contacted the police after she found out that her child was missing. The police team of Koregaon Park police station arrested Usha Chavan, 40, from Ahmednagar district and reunited the child with her mother.

On interrogation, the police found out that the accused belonged to a paradhi community, and in their community, the girl’s family received a dowry from the groom's family. Usha abducted the girl to raise the minor and take dowry when she got married.

The woman had already got her older daughter married and had taken Rs 30,000 as dowry. She wanted to use the abducted child to beg until then and do the same with the abducted child.

The girl was abducted on 23 May while her mother was sleeping in an auto-rickshaw on Dhole Patil road.
