9th April 2021

A plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking direction to constitute a body to ban the screening of obscene/vulgar songs of non-film available on the internet platforms such as Youtube, Instagram, Spotify, etc.  It was pleaded to establish a regulatory authority/censor board to censor their lyrics/videos. The plea also seeks direction to make it mandatory for the composers to get certificates before publishing their songs.

The petitioners further stated that it might be an obstacle towards gender equality if no such content is banned. Moreover, non-film songs, through their tawdry songs, influence misbehaving with women and indulging in illegal activities. This adversely impacts society at large, and especially the youth.

The Bench issued a notice to the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and noted the matter for further hearing on 17th May.
