A petition has been filed by the chief editor of Republic Bharat Arnab Goswami, challenging his arrest by the Maharashtra Police in Bombay High court. A Division Bench of Justices S.S. Shinde and M.S. Karnik was hearing an appeal filed by Mr Goswami, who is currently in judicial custody, whether a habeas corpus should be issued ordering authorities to produce him in the court as he has been unlawfully detained and sought to cancel the FIR against him under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The advocate of Mr Goswami Aabad Ponda argued that the police had ignored the closure report of the case. Without any judicial interference, the Mumbai police have opened a case of their own. He further stated that the whole case is made as an act of revenge for the news channel that questioned the working of those in power.
