AG’S APPROVAL FOR ANOTHER CONTEMPT CASE AGAINST KUNAL KAMRA

The Learned Attorney General granted the consent to initiate contempt proceeding against Comedian Kunal Kamra, who allegedly passed derogatory comments at Chief Justice SA Bobde; the Attorney General KK Venugopal has given his consent to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Kamra.
The Attorney Generally contended that deliberately insulting India's Chief Justice would equally be an insult to the Supreme Court of India itself, which the Chief Justice heads. The said tweet is vulgar and obnoxious in nature, and undoubtedly it would lower the authority of the Supreme Court of India and affect the public's confidence at large. The litigant public has in the institution of the Supreme Court of India itself. Given the above, I accordingly grant consent under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1975.
