AK VENUGOPAL REFUSES TO GRANT SANCTION TO PROCEED CONTEMPT OF COURT AGAINST FORMER CJI RANJAN GOGOI

Saket Gokhale is an RTI activist, known for initiating and getting sanctioned by the Attorney General to proceed with contempt of court proceeding against comedian Kunal Kamra and comic Rachita Taneja. Recently, Gokhale had written a letter to the attorney general seeking sanction to initiate contempt of court proceeding against former Chief Justice of India - Ranjan Gogoi for making remarks of the Indian Judiciary.
Ranjan Gogoi during an event made remarks including “ You want a 5 trillion dollar economy but you have a ransacked judiciary”, “Only corporates are willing to take chances with their millions of rupees to go to the Supreme Court”.
AG Venugopal while declining to initiate contempt of court proceeding against Ranjan Gogoi under section 15 of contempt of court Act said, “Everything that has been said by Gogoi was for the betterment of the institution and will not in any manner scandalize the court in the eyes of the public”.
