CJI BOBDE OBJECTS TO BEING ADDRESSED AS  “YOUR HONOUR”

A Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India Cautioned a law student who appeared as a party - in person when he addressed the bench as “Your Honour”.

The bench comprising Justice S A Bobde, Justice V Ramasubhramaniam, and Justice AS Bopanna while hearing the petition by the law student, seeking appointment of judges to the district criminal courts referred to the bench as “ Your Honour” to which the bench remarked that this was not the US Supreme Court and that he should not refer to the bench as  “Your Honour”.

The petitioner- law student apologized and said he will instead refer to the bench as  “My Lord” to which the Chief Justice of India remarked “Whatever, But don’t use Incorrect terms”. The bench also stated that the petitioner has not done his homework regarding the petition filed by him as he did not cite the remarkable Malik Mazhar Sultan Case. This particular case has been adjourned for 4 weeks.
