CJI DY Chandrachud: Supreme Court Focuses On People, Not Poly-Vocality
The Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, expressed his perspective on the nature of the Supreme Court during the felicitation ceremony for newly appointed judges, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice SV Bhatti. The event was organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). He emphasized that the Supreme Court is a "people-centric court" rather than a "polyvocal court."
Referring to the backgrounds of Justices Bhuyan and Bhatti, the CJI underscored that their appointments signify the inclusivity of the Supreme Court as the apex institution for the entire nation, not limited to specific regions. He stated that diversity is a crucial consideration for the collegium when selecting judges. The objective is to ensure that the bench represents the rich tapestry of India.
Chandrachud addressed the concept of being a "polyvocal court," acknowledging the criticism it has faced. However, he presented a positive view, emphasizing that this diversity is inherent in the individuality of each judge. He highlighted the significance of judges from various regions collaborating on cases, as it mirrors the essence of the Supreme Court, wherein diverse experiences converge to shape legal decisions.
The CJI emphasized that this diversity holds profound importance in cultivating trust among the populace. People are more likely to have faith in the judiciary when they perceive a reflection of themselves in the judicial process.
Chandrachud also stressed the unity between the bar and the bench in their shared mission of delivering justice to common citizens. He highlighted the solidarity that transcends religious, linguistic, and caste differences, as they are united in the noble endeavor of advancing justice.
In essence, the Chief Justice's address celebrated the people-centric approach of the Supreme Court, underlining its commitment to representing India's multifaceted society and fostering trust in the justice system through inclusivity and unity between the legal community and the judiciary.
