In a striking display of indignation and solidarity, major government hospitals across Delhi will suspend all elective services indefinitely beginning Monday in response to the barbaric rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata.

The prolonged strikes is being announced to call for quick action and protection for all healthcare workers, according to the doctors, who also want an early and transparent investigation with "severe punishment for those involved"

Dr Aviral Mathur, president of FORDA, emphasized the importance of prioritizing doctors' welfare, for them to continue their critical work without fear."We can't stand by while our safety is threatened. The recent brutal rape and murder of a fellow doctor on hospital grounds is the final straw" Dr Mathur stated.

"We are organizing an indefinite strike to demand urgent action and protection for all healthcare workers. Our ability to care for patients depends on our safety" he said.

The action comes in response to a request by the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA), which was made after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College. The 32-year-old woman's semi-naked body was discovered in the seminar hall of a government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital on Thursday night.

Many residential doctors' associations conducted a candlelight march on Saturday, demanding a swift and thorough probe, as well as a CBI inquiry into the matter.

On Saturday, the Kolkata Police detained the accused under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS and brought him before Sealdah court, where he was remanded in custody until August 23.

In context: On Friday morning, a 31-year-old woman junior doctor was discovered dead in Kolkata's state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking a political firestorm in West Bengal, with her family and the opposition BJP claiming she was raped and killed. The doctor, a doctoral candidate, was discovered in the building's seminar hall.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences on the doctor's loss and called the family, assuring them of her full support. Santanu Sen, a TMC Rajya Sabha MP, has vowed a "complete and fair investigation into the case" "We will see that the truth prevails. Sen stated that if anyone is proven to have been engaged, harsh punishment will be taken" Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief, stated on X that the woman was "raped and murdered" , "Her body was discovered in the duty room. The Mamata Banerjee Government is attempting to conceal the crime. The Kolkata Police have been directed to cover up and portray the incident as a suicide. Media is not permitted entry. Repeat: no lady is secure in West Bengal" he stated.
