The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has included all types of Digital Media, including Over the Top (OTT) Platforms under its domain, according to the notification S.O. 4040(E) on November 9, 2020, issued by the Government of India. The ministry official said this step was taken to bring an equal level of playing field for all media. It also brings an enabling regulatory authority so that all digital players adhere to the law of ministry.

The  includes the following under the scope of Digital/Online Media:

  • Films and Audio-Visual programs are made available by online content providers to users.
  • News and current affairs information on online platforms.

No law in India regulates digital content in India. With this notice in place, the government will now control the online content.
