6th March

"Graduation is considered to be a basic education, the father will have to bear the expenses of his son not only till he is 18 but till he receives his first degree", the Apex Bench said this during a hearing of the case.

After the divorce in 2005, the Family court court-ordered 20,000 every month to his son as living allowances. Aggrieved by the verdict of the Lower court, the father filed an appeal to the High Court. The Hon'ble HC upheld the order of the family court.

The person further filed a petition in the Supreme Court stating that he's an employee of the Health Department of the Karnataka Government and earns 21,000 every month. Further, he's married (2nd marriage) and has two children. Payment of 20k as allowance would make day-to-day life difficult for him and his family.

The bench reduced the amount to 10,000 but which will be increased by 1000 every financial year
