JOURNALIST SHYAM SINGH AND OTHER ACTIVIST BOOKED UNDER UAPA, MOVE TO TOP COURT
Journalist Shyam Meera Singh and other activists moved to the Supreme Court after the Tripura police booked them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). They moved to the Top court to quash the First Information Report registered against them. Journalist Shyam Meera Singh was booked under UAPA by the BJP-led Tripura Government for his tweet, “Tripura is burning.”
UAPA notices were also sent to four Supreme Court lawyers, Ansar Indori, Ehtesham Hashmi, Amit Srivastava, and Mukesh Kumar, who conducted a fact-finding inquiry into the communal violence in the State of Tripura before presenting their findings on social media. Tripura Police further booked more than 100 social media account holders under the Act, forgery cases, and criminal Conspiracy. The BJP led government also served notices to Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube authorities, asking them to freeze their accounts and furnish particulars of the account holders.
As per the reports, more than 12 mosques, three houses, and nine shops belonging to Muslims were vandalized during the rallies by groups protesting against the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh during Durga Puja.
The Tripura Police claimed that social media users exaggerated the claims.
