LAKSHADWEEP - THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT PROPOSES TOTAL BAN ON SLAUGHTER OF COWS, BULLS AND BULLOCKS IN THE UNION TERRITORY

 The Central Government has proposed a law to impose a total ban on the slaughter of cows, bulls, and bullocks in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The Central Government also stated that violation of the provisions will be punishable for 10 years and shall not be less than 7  years along with a fine which may extend to 5 lakh.

Through an invitation the draft of Lakshadweep Animal Preservation Regulation, 2021 has been placed on public domain on 25th February - seeking comments from the public till 28th March. 

Section 8 and 7 of the draft specifies prohibition against buying or selling any beef product. The draft also prohibits the storage, transportation, import, or export of specified animals. Even slaughter of any other animals, a certificate from competent authority is compulsory. It is important to note that slaughter deems to be a cognizable and non-bailable offense.
