Recently, a District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Shivamooga, slapped a hefty penalty on a liquor shop owner for unfair trade practice.

A consumer dragged a liquor shop owner into dispute for charging an extra price of Rs 42 over the MRP. The bench consisting of Forum President C. M. Chanchala, Savita B Pattanashetty and PV Lingaraju ordered the owner of Srinidhi wines to pay Rs 1000 for causing mental agony, Rs 2500 court expenses and 1000 for charging extra 42 rs with an annual interest of 10%, to the complainant. He has also directed him to deposit Rs 5000 in the Consumer Welfare Fund.

BACKGROUND

The Complaint brought whiskey of 21 pouches of 90 ml each and paid Rs 630. The actual price was Rs 587.58; however, the wine shop collected Rs 630. The owner of the wine shop contended that he charged for the packaging material as a large number of liquors was bought.
