The Madras High Court, in the case of Grace Banu v. State of Tamil Nadu, directed to provide a copy of the petition to the Advocate general and also instructed the government to approach the assessment of cash assistance to the third gender community.

 

Background.

The petition was filed by the representative of the third gender community, where he brought the notice that most of the members of his community are without the ration card. Therefore, they are struggling to receive ration from the government shops. This PIL was filed under Article 226 of the Indian constitution for issuance of the Writ of Mandamus directing the respondents. 

 

Final Result

The court was informed about the list of measures passed by the State Government regarding the previous order passed on this petition.

  1. The government permitted covid cash relief to all the rice holders, including the third gender community.
  2. The Government has also decided to provide 2000rs for the third gender community, even for those who do not carry ration cards.

The court also advised the government that the state will hope to provide vaccination to the third-gender community on a priority basis.
