On Wednesday, Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India. The ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the oath of office to Justice Chandrachud was administered by President Droupadi Murmu. He took over from UU Lalit, who retired on Tuesday as Chief Justice of India.

Background of Justice Chandrachud

He was born on November 11, 1959. In 1979, he graduated from Delhi's St Stephen's College. In 1982, he completed his LL.B. from Delhi University and his LL.M. in 1983 from Harvard University. He also obtained the degree of Doctor of Juridical Sciences (SJD) in 1986 from Harvard. 

Justice Chandrachud was designated a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in 1998 and served as an Additional Solicitor General for India from 1998 to 2000. During that period he appeared in Public interest litigation, the rights of bonded women workers, HIV-positive workers in the workplace, contract labor, minorities' rights, and other several important cases.

On March 29, 2000, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court and served there until October 31, 2013, when he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. On May 13, 2016, he was promoted to the Apex Court. since 2016, several notable judgments have been authored, including dissenting opinions.

As the lone dissenting judge on a nine-judge Constitution Bench, he held that the Aadhaar Act was unconstitutional because it had been passed as a money bill.

With Justice Chandrachud as chairman, the Supreme Court E-Court Committee has created a framework for live-streaming court proceedings in India, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted hearings.
