Opposition MPs Suspended Amidst Placard Protest: Winter Session Heats Up
In a dramatic turn of events, forty more opposition MPs, including notable figures like Shashi Tharoor, Dimple Yadav, and Manish Tewari, faced suspension from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The move, spearheaded by Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla, involved the suspension of key figures, such as NCP leader Supriya Sule, Congress MPs Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, and others for the remainder of the winter session.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the motion for suspension, emphasizing that it was in response to the MPs displaying placards. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi noted, "All MPs had agreed that they would not resort to this in the new Parliament building."
The suspension tally now stands at 78 MPs, comprising 33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha, as 33 MPs were suspended on Monday. The suspended members will remain so until a report is submitted by the panel.
The suspended MPs have been seeking a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach in Parliament on December 13.
In a parallel development in Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for mimicking him during a protest. Dhankhar expressed his dismay, stating, "How ridiculous, how shameful, how unacceptable," in response to the incident.
The winter session, already marked by heightened tensions and disruptions, continues to witness significant clashes between the government and the opposition, creating a charged atmosphere within the Parliament.
