Recently, a lawyer named Rahul Bhardwaj and his son Yugan Bhardwaj moved to the Delhi High Court to stop all flying services of budget airline SpiceJet given the recent safety issues that the airline has faced.

The petitioners argued that SpiceJet’s flights need to be controlled to prevent a big accident that can damage the life and property of many passengers. The petitioners also argued that despite several incidents and narrow escapes, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not taken any action against the airline. This amounts to a violation of the passengers' right to life under Article 21.

Background

SpiceJet has been in the news lately after a series of mishaps.

One of its Delhi-Dubai flights had to land in Karachi due to a technical issue, while another plane developed a crack in the windshield. Another incident occurred when a flight that took off from Patna caught fire and had to be landed just minutes later. It was discovered that a bird had hit the plane.
