PLEA IN SC TO CANCEL BAIL OF A PERSON INVOLVED IN HONOR KILLING
The Top court was hearing a petition challenging Rajasthan High Court's decision of granting bail to a man involved in honour killing and an accused of conspiring the murder of his brother-in-law.
Background
Amit Nair from Kerala was shot dead in front of his pregnant wife Mamta Nair from Rajasthan over their inter-caste marriage. In 2017 Mamta's parents and two other men barged into the Couples' house and shot Amit. They further dragged their 6-month-old daughter.
The couple got married in 2011 but did not inform Mamta's parents till 2015 due to different castes. In 2015, Mamta informed her parents, they renounced her from family properties. They also repeatedly threatened the couple and said they are not ready to bear such a societal blot. Due to the continuance threat, the couple filed a police complaint. However, the complaint was withdrawn after her parents apologized. On one occasion, Mamta was forcefully made to abort. On May 17 2017, Mamta was pressured to go to her paternal place. On refusal, a man allegedly shot the husband in the face at point-blank range. Later, Amit was declared dead in the hospital.
Mamta Nair moved to the apex court challenging Rajasthan HC's decision of granting bail to her brother, who is allegedly involved in killing her husband.
Decision
Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, after hearing the arguments said that the Court would pass orders in the matter on Monday.
