In a significant development, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud inaugurated the Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday. The event was graced by the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.

CJI Chandrachud took the opportunity to address a key concern in the legal education system, emphasizing the need for Hindi to be adopted as the medium of instruction in the university. He argued that the emphasis on English proficiency creates barriers for students from diverse backgrounds.

"I appeal to Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University to ensure that the medium of instruction takes place in Hindi so that the best students from Uttar Pradesh become the best lawyers who will practice before the High Court," he urged.

The CJI delivered his address in both Hindi and English, aligning with his call for linguistic inclusivity. He highlighted the challenges faced by students from varied backgrounds due to their preference for English fluency.

"The composition of law schools in terms of region, gender, and the premium attached to the fluency in English...acts as a hindrance to the full participation and assimilation of students coming from diverse backgrounds," noted CJI Chandrachud.

He acknowledged that the contemporary legal education system often favors English-speaking urban students, leading to a lack of diversity in law schools. The CJI also stressed the importance of creating an inclusive and dynamic environment on college campuses, where diverse beliefs and opinions can interact.

Furthermore, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the need for the new National Law University to extend its reach beyond Prayagraj, reaching smaller towns in Uttar Pradesh and other states. He highlighted the role of technology in expanding educational boundaries.

Reflecting on the state of legal education, CJI Chandrachud urged both NLUs in Uttar Pradesh to enhance the standards of legal education, meeting the evolving demands of the field. He encouraged students to be knowledgeable about various subjects, including political theory, economics, philosophy, and the history and culture of the nation.

The CJI also advocated for the democratization of specialized subjects like space law and technology law, making them accessible to students beyond NLUs.

In his closing remarks, CJI Chandrachud commended lawyers who work pro bono to provide legal representation to those in need. He acknowledged the significant role lawyers play in pursuing justice for diverse clients, whether popular or unpopular causes.

This inauguration ceremony marked a milestone for legal education in Uttar Pradesh, with the CJI's remarks pointing toward a more inclusive and diversified future for law schools in the state.
