PROTECTION TO LIVE IN COUPLE- ALLAHABAD HC
6TH DECEMBER 2020
The Allahabad High Court has granted police protection to a couple who wished to live together; the high court observed that live-in relationships between consenting adults are not an offence. A high court's division bench observed that a man, 28 years and a woman aged 24 years, wished to live together but feared being harassed and intimidated by their family members. After the woman’s family tried to get her married to someone else, the couple decided to live together.
The High Court further observed that it’s a settled law that nobody has the authority to interfere with a man and a woman who are adults and living together with their free will, including their parents.
Furthermore, the High Court held that petitioners are at liberty to live together. No person will be permitted to interfere in their peaceful living, as the right to life is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
