Reel vs. Real: SGPC Challenges 'Emergency' Film's Inaccurate Depiction of Sikh History
In response to allegations that some scenes in the Kangana Ranaut film ‘Emergency’ disrespect the character and history of Sikhs, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has served legal notice to the film's producers. Aware of Sikh feelings, the SGPC has insisted that scenes deemed offensive be removed.
Kangana and the other film producers have been ordered to withdraw the trailer, which was released on August 14, from all public and social media platforms and request a written apology from the Sikh community, according to a notice delivered
by counsel Amanbir Singh Siali, the SGPC's legal adviser.
As the film's lead actress, director, and producer, Kangana is currently a Member of Parliament for Mandi (HP).
According to SGPC secretary Partap Singh, separate letters were also sent to Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification Prasoon Joshi, requesting that the film script be
examined before it is released on September 6.
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is supposedly depicted proposing Indira Gandhi votes for the Congress in exchange for a separate Sikh state. He argued that in the film, Sikhs, especially Bhindranwale were portrayed as separatists and terrorists, which was not the case.
"Given the anger within the Sikh community, the film should be banned. If the objectionable anti-Sikh scenes are not removed from the film, legal action will be taken against the filmmakers" he stated.
