The Supreme Court of India, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, will be listening to a group of requests from people asking for same-sex marriages to be legally recognized. The hearing will begin on April 18th, Tuesday, and the other judges on the bench will be Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, PS Narasimha, and Hima Kohli.

The people making these requests believe that the LGBTQIA+ community should have the right to marry the person of their choosing. However, the Central government has opposed these requests made by gay couples. They say that the idea of same-sex marriage does not fit in with the traditional Indian family unit concept, which involves a biological man and woman having children.

A religious organization called Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind has also expressed similar views and said that same-sex marriage is a concept that comes from Western culture and should not be imposed on India. On the other hand, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights has supported the petitioners and believes that same-sex couples should have the same adoption and succession rights as others.
