On October 2, 2023, the Supreme Court, in collaboration with the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), commemorated Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti in New Delhi. The day was marked by a dedicated cleanliness drive and the ceremonial garlanding of the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and a photograph of Lal Bahadur Shastri within the Supreme Court compound.

Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud delivered a heartfelt message on this special occasion, stating, "On this special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we commemorate the birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, whose principles of non-violence, truth, and self-discipline continue to inspire us in our pursuit of justice." CJI Chandrachud also paid tribute to Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, highlighting the visionary leader's commitment to a strong and self-reliant India.

The Chief Justice emphasized the profound significance of cleanliness, echoing Mahatma Gandhi's teachings that it extends beyond the physical realm and reflects our inner state. He urged members of the SCBA to consider this occasion a reminder of their shared commitment to justice, integrity, and upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution. CJI Chandrachud urged all to strive not only for a cleaner physical environment but also for a more transparent and accountable legal system.

The event, presided over by Justice Sanjeev Khanna, underscored the continued relevance of Gandhian philosophy. Justice Khanna quoted Mahatma Gandhi, stating, "Facts mean truth, and once we adhere to truth, the law comes to our aid naturally." He also celebrated Lal Bahadur Shastri as a true Gandhian, known for his selfless devotion to the nation.

This commemorative event serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring importance of these two iconic leaders' legacies in shaping India's path toward justice, truth, and self-reliance.
