SUPREME COURT SETS PANEL FOR STUBBLE BURNING

The Hon’ble Supreme Court-appointed retired Justice Madan B. Lokur as a one-person committee to form steps and certain rules and any other measures required to prevent stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh which is a large source of pollution in Delhi-national capital region (NCR).

The apex court directed the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) and the chief secretaries of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh to help the aforesaid panel concerning physical surveillance of fields where stubble is burnt, by the Hon'ble Court want to assure that the pollution in Delhi-NCR is a serious concern. It is the responsibility of authorities to have a check on such issues to assure to stop such activity which contributes in pollution.

The Apex Court further held that folks of Delhi-NCR could breathe fresh air with no pollution; the health of the people shall be the first concern.

The Court observed that Justice Lokur had addressed pollution matter which also included the aspect of stubble burning. The petitioner contended before the bench that the panel headed by Justice (retd) Lokur be constituted as he has addressed various environmental issues.
