THE NCPCR ISSUES NOTICE AGAINST NETFLIX TO STOP AIRING BOMBAY BEGUMS
12th March 2021
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Thursday asked popular streaming platform Netflix to stop airing the web series, BOMBAY BEGUMS, saying the content may result in exploitation of children.
The NCPCR issued a notice to the OTT platform and asked for a detailed report within 24 hours, failure of which will result in strict legal action. NCPCR took this action based on complaints from two Twitter handles that objected portrayal of the fantasies of children - normalize minors having casual sex and drug abuse. NCPCR took cognizance of the tweets u/s 13 (1) ( j) of CPCR (The commissions for protection of child right) Act, 2005.
The NCPCR, in its notice, stated, “This type of series will only pollute the young minds and result in exploitation of children. Netflix should take extra precaution while streaming content in respect of children and for the children, refrain themselves from getting into such things”.
