Case: MC Mehta vs Union of India and ors
Bench: Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka

The Supreme Court prohibited any business activities within 500 meters of the boundary walls of the Taj Mahal. The bench directed the Agra Development Authority (ADA) to guarantee that all such businesses are removed.

The Court was hearing an interlocutory application moved by a group of shop owners who had been assigned plots outside the 500m radius of the monument.

The Court, however, declined the prayer by the applicants to refrain from charging the increased license fees of ₹3000 per month. The Court granted liberty to the applicants to work out possible remedies with the ADA towards the same.
