Twitter moved to the Karnataka High Court, challenging the orders issued by the Central government, asking it to remove certain content. The  Government had recently asked the microblogging platform to take down certain content or face criminal action.

Recently, Twitter has been at odds with the Central government and some state governments. Last year, the Uttar Pradesh Police issued notice to Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari under Section 41A CrPC. The action was taken in response to an FIR filed against Twitter and others in connection with a video in which an elderly Muslim man was forced to shave his beard and chant "Vande Mataram" and "Jai Shri Ram". Maheshwari then secured interim protection from Karnataka High Court. An appeal was filed by the UP government against the same, however, the same is pending before the Supreme Court.
