The Madras High Court recently described the poor safety situation of women within the country while dismissing a default bail application filed by an accused in the Pollachi rape case.

Justice M Dhandapani said that the father of the nation lamented that the independence of the country would Stand successful when women in the country are able to go outside without fear. However, the situation is far from the idea. Women are not able to move out even during the daytime without fear.

BACKGROUND

A gang in Pollachi and Coimbatore raped and blackmailed hundreds of women, including college students. The gang contacted these women through fake social media accounts and lured them into meetings; the women were sexually assaulted and recorded on camera and then blackmailed them through the video recordings. The case was assumed to be politically overturned and was attacked by a group of people, including a youth member of AIADMK. It came to light in February 2019 after the brother of the victim lodged a police complaint. After the outcry, the Coimbatore SP revealed the name of the survivor and her brother; the Tamil Nadu Government also revealed the name of the survivor. Thereafter, the case was transferred to the central Beuro of Investigation.

The High Court showed disappointment and directed to take action against the act of officers. Justice Dhandapani further issued various directions to ensure expeditious trial of the case. The court was also directed to wrap the trial within 6 months from the date of commencement of the trial.
