The Tamil Nadu (TN) government has recently banned all forms of online gaming, which has been challenged by the All India Gaming Federation in the Madras High Court.

The bench of acting Chief Justice T Raja and Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy decided to hear the plea on November 16 along with three other similar issue petitions.

In this instant matter, the Federation challenged the constitutional validity of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Ordinance, 2022. Sunil Krishnamurthy, general secretary of the Federation, claimed that only 'games of chance' could be banned in India.

He further pointed out that games such as rummy and poker, which require skill, were wrongly classified as games of chance by the TN government. Thus, through the new ordinance, such games can be banned.

According to the Federation, it makes constant efforts to ensure online gaming is conducted ethically. All its members and online gaming companies are required to follow a charter that warns players against the negative effects of gaming, including addiction.
