Types of law Degrees in India
A lawyer in India is not restricted to courtrooms but can find jobs like a legal advisor to a corporate lawyer to an educationist. One can choose a career as per their goals and career plan. Law courses are offered among various government and private Colleges/Universities in India. One can choose to study law after completion of their 12th or some may choose after completion of graduation. One can also specialize in law after completing graduation. Below is the list of types of law degrees.
Integrated Law Degree Programs
An integrated law degree program is a program for candidates who have just passed out from high school (10+2). By integration, the program means integration of law along with a subject like Business, Arts, or Science. The program consists of subjects from both fields. The subjects of Commerce, Arts, Commerce, and Science are taught in the first, second, and sometimes until the third year, simultaneously with law subjects. The remaining course is dedicated to the specialized study of law.
The duration of this degree is five years. This integration program takes one less year to complete as compared to the traditional three-year law degree. Below is a brief of the said integration.
Bachelor of Business Administration and Law (B.B.A. + LL.B)
This is a combination of a Bachelor of Business Administration and Law. It consists of subjects like Economics, Business Management, Accounts, and Marketing along with legal subjects. Students interested in working in corporate law firms, companies, or even start-ups may prefer this program. The duration of this course is five years.
Bachelor of Arts and Law (B.A. + LL.B)
This is a combination of Bachelor of Arts and Law and consists of subjects like Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology along with subjects of legal.
Bachelor of Commerce and Law (B. Com + LL.B)
It is a combination of degrees for candidates interested in Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary along with their law degree. It consists of subjects like Auditing, Statistics, Economics, and Business Communication along with legal subjects. The duration of this integrated course is 5 years.
Bachelor of Technology and Law (B.Tech + LL.B)
There are several universities and colleges in India to offer this degree. Students study subjects regarding engineering and law in the same program. The course duration is 6 years.
Bachelor of Science and Law (B. Sc + LL.B)
This is a five years course for candidates interested in subjects like Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Digital Electronics along with the law.
LL.B. Bachelor of Law
This is the traditional 3 years law degree, pursued by candidates who have completed their graduation degree in any field. This degree only consists of subjects pertaining to the field of law such as criminal law, constitutional law, tort, etc.
Master of Laws (LL.M)
LLM can be pursued by candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in law (any of the above types). A law graduate who wishes to specialize in a particular field of law may choose to seek this degree.
