Angad Singh moved to Delhi HC challenging his deportation from India.
Case: Angad Singh v Union of India & Ors
Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Central government to respond to Angad Singh's petition challenging his deportation from India. Singh is a United States-based journalist and documentary filmmaker with Vice News.
In response to Singh's plea, Justice Prathiba M Singh directed the government to file a response within four weeks.
At the hearing, Anurag Ahluwalia, the counsel for the Centre government, said that the affidavit would disclose the grounds on which the petitioner was denied entry into the country.
Singh holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card and is a US citizen. As well as documenting the Shaheen Bagh protests and farmers' protests in India, he also covered the Covid-19 pandemic.
He was also nominated for an Emmy for his documentary on the devastation caused by the Delta wave of Coronavirus.
In August, Singh was deported to New York. His mother wrote on Facebook that his deportation was the result of his journalism and that he had come here to meet his family residing in Punjab.
Singh has petitioned the court to restrain the government from denying him entry to India since it violates his fundamental citizenship rights.
Moreover, he has sought a declaration that the government's action to deport him was illegal, as well as disclosure of all materials and data related to him that are in the government's possession.
