The Central government notified the appointment of Justice UU Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

The Supreme Court will be headed by Justice Lalit after the current Chief Justice, NV Ramana, steps down on August 26. His tenure as CJI will end on November 8 this year.

As is custom, earlier this week, CJI Ramana recommended the name of Justice Lalit to take over as the next CJI. Affirming his appointment, the Centre issued a notification stating,

"In exercise of the powers granted by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution, the President is delighted to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27th August, 2022."

Justice Lalit was born to a former judge of the Bombay High Court and now a Senior Advocate, UR Lalit, on November 9, 1957. Justice UU Lalit practiced at the Bombay High Court till December 1985. He moved to Delhi in January 1986 and was designated a Senior Advocate in April 2004 of the Supreme Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Top Court on August 13, 2014, and will demit office on November 8 this year.
