21st March 2021

Recently, a Petition has been filed in the Bombay HC seeking direction to use A4-size papers mandatory for filing in HC as well as subordinate courts of Maharashtra.

The petition filed by Adv Ajinkya Mohan (Ajinkya Mohan Udane Vs Registrar General, Bombay HC) said that the use of A4 size paper printed on both sides instead of legal-sized paper with single size being printed is vital for the environment. A4 size will help save a large number of papers and space; thus, a smaller number of trees will be cut down.  As per Article 51 A (g) of the Constitution, it is the duty of every person to protect and improve the environment. Moreover, various directions and notifications have been issued by various HCs, allowing filing in A4 size papers printed on both sides.

A similar petition was filed by Adv Sujay Joshi, who Adv Ajinkya represented along with Adv Ranjit Shinde. In this plea, the court directed to approach the administrative side; both the Advocates reached the Registrar general but did not receive any response.

Since they did not receive any response, Adv Udane filed this present petition before the HC.
