ATIA SABRI WHO FOUGHT AGAINST TRIPLE TALAQ TO GET MAINTENANCE
7th April 2021
Atia Sabri has won her battle against the regressive method of triple talaq. Finally, her battle came to an end after the Saharanpur family court directed her estranged husband to pay 21,000 as a monthly allowance. Since the fight was contested for five years, therefore an amount of 13 lakh has been awarded to her.
Background
She married Md Wajid Ali in 2012. A year later, she gave birth to her first daughter, and in 2014 to her second daughter. The in-laws humiliated and harassed Sabri as they wanted a son. She also accused inlaws of asking for dowry. The stormy marital life ended in November 2015 when her husband gave her instant triple talaq.
In November, she approached the Saharanpur court along with her two daughters for seeking maintenance allowance from her husband. In the duration of the case, she moved to the Supreme Court seeking the ban of Triple talaq. In a Historical Victory, the five benches outlawed the 1400 years old practice, and her battle for alimony continued in Saharanpur family court.
The trial court contested the matter for five years, and the judgments were made in her favour. She also requested Muslim women to fight for their rights.
