Chief Justice Dipankar Datta has been appointed to the Supreme Court of India by the Central government. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay HC in 2020
He was recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court on September 26 by the Collegium of the Supreme Court.

Having been born in February 1965, Dipankar Datta was the son of his father, former Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Salil Kumar Datta. In 1989, he earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Calcutta and enrolled as an advocate.

After being elevated as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006, he practiced primarily in the Supreme Court and High Courts in constitutional and civil matters.

As soon as Justice Datta takes oath as a Supreme Court judge, the apex court will have 28 working judges as opposed to its sanctioned 34.
