President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, has appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief justice of India on the recommendation by CJI SA Bobde. CJI Bobde recommended Justice Ramana's name to take over the highest judicial position, in line with the seniority Norms followed in appointing SC CJIs. Justice NV Ramana will be the 48th Chief Justice of India after the retirement of CJI SA Bobde on April 23rd.

He was born in Ponnavaram Village of Andhra Pradesh in 1958. During his lifetime, he practised in HC of AP, AP tribunals and SC. He also acted as Additional Adv General of AP; in 2000, he was appointed as a permanent judge of AP HC. In 2013 he functioned as Acting Chief Justice of AP. Lastly, in 2014 Justice Ramana was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi HC. Now he will serve the longest tenure as CJI with over 16 months before he retires on August 26, 2022.

Recently, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy (AP Chief Minister) had written to CJI Bobde, complaining about Justice Ramana's connection with the recent Amaravati land scam. However, the allegations were dismissed after an in-house procedure to examine the allegations.
