Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur (DNLU), has taken a progressive step by introducing menstrual leaves for students on campus. This move comes after a long-pending request from the Student Bar Association (SBA).

According to a circular issued on Friday, full-time female students at DNLU can now avail of menstrual leaves for difficulties during their menstrual cycle. Previously, students were allowed to take medical leave for up to 36 lectures per semester, but this did not specifically address menstrual-related challenges.

The circular states, "It is hereby notified that full-time female students of the university can avail the general make-up for the loss of classes occasioned due to the menstrual cycle. Rules relating to the general make-up on the extent of the number of days, i.e., 6 classes per subject per semester, will remain the same as notified and practiced in the university at present."

The Dean of Student Welfare will have the authority to approve these leaves.

The introduction of menstrual leaves was not without its challenges. The SBA had to work diligently to convince the authorities that such leaves were necessary and not discriminatory toward male students. They engaged in conversations with the administration to convey the importance of menstrual leave.

Kartik Jain, a former Vice-President of the SBA, noted that DNLU is now the only institution recognizing menstrual pain as a valid reason for medical leave.

This move follows DNLU's earlier initiative to introduce audio-visual learning for students, showcasing the university's commitment to modern and inclusive approaches to education.
