29th April 2021

The Bombay HC raised an important question and asked the central and state government to clarify if Aadhaar Card was mandatory for prisoners to get covid 19 vaccination?

During the hearing concerning the rise of Covid 19 cases in the states, it was informed by professor Raghav, who worked closely with prisoners, that several prisoners were not able to avail vaccination due to lack of an Aadhaar Card.

The Court observed that to maintain a database and identify if the person is being vaccinated, an Aadhaar card is required. However, The Court said that authorities have to develop other solutions for people who may not have an Aadhaar Card. Moreover, Aadhaar card camps should be set up within jails to ensure the Aadhaar card is issued to every inmate.

The Bench directed AG Ashutosh Kumbakoni, appearing on behalf of the state government, to discuss the issue with the Solicitor General of the Central and inform about the same on 4th May.
