PLEA BEFORE DELHI HC SEEKING DIRECTION TO RESTRAIN THE MEDIA TRAIL OF WRESTLER SUSHIL KUMAR
27th May 2021
The Delhi HC recently heard a plea seeking direction to restrain the media trial of Wrestler Sushil Kumar.
The plea argued that the media had affected his career. The media trial will cause prejudice to his free and fair trial. The plea also sought directions to stop media channels such as Aaj Tak, News Nation, India today, the Lallantop, etc., to stop reporting the case with malignant facts. In addition, to conduct an inquiry by the press Council about how the media trial is going. Further, the direction has been sought to restrain the respondents from disclosing any information about the case.
The plea submitted that Sushil Kumar has won several medals for the country and has earned a reputation, which has been destroyed only for an FIR. By citing various famous cases, the petitioner said that the court itself had outlined the danger of media trial in the previous cases.
Lastly, media brings a platform where citizens get to know about things around them and society, but media trial has caused false portrayal of the accused only the facts that he has been accused and has been not held guilty by the court.
