SC of the USA struck down the constitutional right to abortion in the country.
The Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) overturned its landmark decision in Roe v Wade and struck down the constitutional right to abortion in the country. By a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 judgment, leaving it up to individual states to decide whether abortion is legal or not.
Judges who gave majority opinion are:
-
Justice Clarence Thomas,
-
Justice Samuel Alito,
-
Justice Neil Gorsuch,
-
Justice Brett Kavanaugh and
-
Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
The four justices who voted against overruling Roe v Wade were Chief Justice John Roberts, Justices Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Sonia Sotomayor.
The SC's decision came in the case of Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organisation, where the State of Mississippi sought to invalidate Roe v Wade and to permit elected officials instead to determine how abortion should be regulated or prohibited. The decision of the Apex Court in the Dobbs case upheld a 2018 Mississippi law that banned abortions 15-weeks pregnant women.
