13th April 2021

The SC issued a notice in a PIL seeking the establishment of a board for the welfare of Transgender, to address their social welfare issues and to appoint a standing committee to investigate the reports of abuse against Trans people by the police.

Adv CR Jaya Sukin and Adv Narendra Kumar Verma highlighted the harassment faced by Trans people while looking for housing, employment and education. Due to discrimination, they have fewer opportunities as compared to others. They have restricted access to good education, health care and public places. Despite the Trans Act, Trans people face issues that are partially addressed. They are deprived of their constitutional rights that guarantee equality before the law and equal protection from laws. Various contradictions exist in the Trans Act. Therefore, it is prayed to establish a Transgender Welfare Board and a standing Committee comprising of station House officers, social activist and human rights activist to investigate reports of gross abuse by police against trans people.
