Riyaz Shaikh, who brutally beat a stray dog till she lost her eye and almost a leg, was immediately released after his arrest, with just a notice. Loni Kalbhor Police Station released the accused after finding his reaction valid for beating the stray. Whereas activists are shocked and believe that that crime was brutal and should be punished for the act.

Shaik runs a meat business/shop, got angry when the stray was looking for food in the garbage outside his house. Out of anger, he pulled the dog in the back gate and beat her till she got soaked in blood. After the horrendous incident, the dog had three fractures in her jaw, two on her hind leg and lost complete vision of one of her eyes. On July 2, few witnesses informed animal rights volunteers about the incident. On 9th July, animal rescuers lodged an
FIR against Shaikh.

IO Bhagwat Shendagw said that the accused has three small children, and the dog entered his gate to eat the food. In order to protect his Children, the accused hit the dog thrice with a rock.

Animal rights volunteer Sushmita Das said that when I was at the PS, nobody mentioned the children. In fact, we were told he was drunk at the time of the crime. Moreover, the cops said that he did not do it intentionally; he injured the dog enough that she lost her vision. Is it not a crime? We will wait for the Court date; the accused must be punished for his crimes.

Police merely issued a notice u/s 4(1) of the CRPC and mandates that the accused be present at the court or PS whenever called in for any questioning.
